Design Research Methods - mind/research mapping - Design Project A

The RSA design brief I have chosen to unravel is called 'Giving and getting' in which, I have to choose an existing charity and design a means by which it can increase its fundraising and other resources. Therefore make it easier for people to give, or make it easier for charities to ask - or both.

What is a charity?
A charity, or charitable organization is a particular type of voluntary organization. It is required to use any profit or surplus only for the organization's purposes. The Charities Act 2006 states the meaning of 'charity' as a body established for exclusively charitable purposes: that is, purposes recognised as capable of being charitable and that are "for the public benefit".

What is the aim of a charity? To make lot's of money for their cause and change the world!

What range of charities are there? There are about 169,000 charities in the UK employing 608,000 paid workers. About 1 in 50 people in employment in the UK work for charities.

Volunteers are a key element in the sector. Volunteering is basically the community mobilising to achieve goals. There are about 13.2 million volunteers in the UK.

The largest charity is the National Trust, with a turn over of £35M. On the other hand many charities are very small, with a pretty hand-to-mouth existence.

Charities cover a huge range of purposes: social care, animals, the environment, international development, religion, the arts, education, and leisure.

Income sources? Charities get their income from a range of sources.

Fundraising: Community, Corporate, Direct Marketing, Events, Legacy, Major Donor, Regional, Statutory, Trust.

Government funding. Increasingly national and local government purchases services from charities.

Sales of goods and services.

Why do people give to charity? What motivates people to give charitable donations? Do people donate because it is seen as a positive social or ethical thing to do? Good deeds are generally rewarded and make people feel good about themselves therefore boosting ones self esteem.

What are the benefits of giving? Is it for economic tax advantages, to enhance career prospects or maybe merely for public recognition?

Why do people choose not to give? Whilst some people support charities others don't.

Giving: to bestow without receiving a return; to present voluntarily and without expecting compensation.

Getting: to receive or come to have possession, use, or enjoyment of.
